The clock is ticking for UK travellers wanting a last minute break in Europe, without the need for additional security checks.
The EU has spoken and the revised target date for the new Entry Exit System for ‘third country nationals’ like Brits, is Sunday 10 November 2024.
UPDATE: As of October 2024, the launch date has been suspended, and there’s no official date for when and how the new biometric IT system will be implemented. Watch this space!
Of course, we can still keep travelling after that date, but expect slower border transit times as we may have to register fingerprints and/or facial scans.
And, with the end of the summer holidays fast approaching, there are some great deals to be had for a hassle-free European getaway.
Oh, and do remember to check the issue date on your passport before you book. The Schengen area rules means you must have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive AND an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave.
On our last trip, the UK Border staff at Calais helpfully pointed out that Pork Belly would need a new passport soon, if he was planning another trip to Europe early in the new year, even though it doesn’t actually expire until the summer of 2025.
Duly noted.
