Spain’s introducing new laws on data collection, which will affect all tourists – both foreign and domestic.
But what it means for UK travellers is still unclear.
Currently, hotels, tourist accommodation and car rental companies in Spain have a legal duty to register the passport details of tourists checking in or picking up a vehicle.
But Royal Decree 933/2021 includes phone numbers, emails and what’s described as ‘Transaction data’ which could mean credit card details and bank accounts.
CEHAT – the organisation that represents hotels, campsites, resorts and apartments, has written to the Spanish government to express concerns about the potential impact of the law on tourism. They’re asking for clarity about what information must be held and, if requested, released to officials.
This comes at a time when Spain is seeing increasing international visitors, with over 53 million in the first seven months of 2024, spending around 71 billion euros.
Until the new law is in force and its real effects felt, fears of ‘Big Brother style’ surveillance could make travellers think twice about choosing Spain for their holidays.
